Understanding Your Health Insurance

1️⃣ Deductible

What you pay before insurance starts sharing costs. After you meet your deductible, you enter the coinsurance phase — where you and your insurer split the bill (often 80/20).

2️⃣ Coinsurance

Your share of costs after the deductible. A 20% coinsurance means you pay 20% of each bill and insurance pays 80% — until you hit your out-of-pocket maximum.

3️⃣ Out-of-Pocket Max

The safety net. Once you've paid this amount (deductible + coinsurance + copays), insurance covers 100% of covered services for the rest of the plan year.

📋 Example: $3,000 Deductible, 20% Coinsurance, $8,700 OOP Max

January: You go to the doctor. The visit costs $250. You haven't met your deductible yet, so you pay the full $250. Remaining deductible: $2,750.

March: You have an MRI that costs $3,000. The first $2,750 goes toward your remaining deductible (now met). The remaining $250 enters coinsurance — you pay 20% ($50) and insurance pays 80% ($200). Total you've paid toward OOP max: $3,050.

July: You have a surgery that costs $25,000. With 20% coinsurance, your share would be $5,000 — but your OOP max is $8,700 and you've already paid $3,050. So you pay $5,650 (hitting your OOP max), and insurance covers the rest. OOP max reached! Insurance now covers 100%.

September–December: Any covered care is 100% paid by insurance. You pay $0 for the rest of the year.

❓ Common questions

What is a health insurance deductible?
A deductible is the amount you pay for covered care before your insurance starts sharing costs. Once you meet your deductible, you move into the coinsurance phase, where you and your insurer split the bill (often 80/20).
What is the difference between a deductible and an out-of-pocket maximum?
Your deductible is the amount you pay before cost-sharing begins, while your out-of-pocket (OOP) maximum is the cap on what you pay in a plan year. After you reach your OOP max, your plan typically covers 100% of covered care for the rest of the year.
What is coinsurance?
Coinsurance is your percentage share of the allowed amount for covered care after you meet your deductible — commonly 20% (an 80/20 plan). You pay coinsurance until you reach your out-of-pocket maximum.
How do I know how much I have left on my deductible?
Enter your annual deductible and how much you have already paid toward it into the calculator. It shows your remaining amount and your current phase — Not Started, In Progress, or Deductible Met — plus what you have left before your out-of-pocket maximum kicks in.
Is this deductible calculator private?
Yes. The calculator runs entirely in your browser — no account, no data collection, no sign-up. Your insurance numbers never leave your device.
